Natural History Museum Metković

Deeply buried in the rich natural history and biological diversity of the Neretva Delta, the Natural History Museum Metković is a precious monument that reveals the unique connection between nature and human interaction.
The collection stands out for its Ornithological Collection, a collection of specimens of birds caught exclusively within the Neretva delta area. This impressive collection, which is one of the largest in Europe, contains more than 340 taxidermies, including as many as 218 different bird species. With its lavish displays, it allows us to peek into the past and witness the rich variety of birds that once inhabited these regions.
In addition to well-known birds, the collection is dominated by rare guests such as ringed birds that found their way from distant polar regions.
The museum has an exhibition that conveys the wealth and diversity of the Neretva Delta to visitors. Glass panels depict the geological and biospeleological peculiarities of the area, while stone samples from local quarries bring petrography to life. Three-dimensional displays of the diverse aquatic and terrestrial habitats of the delta extend through the museum's premises. This diorama presentation culminates with scenes of bird migration and wintering, enriched with video materials and sounds of bird and amphibian calls.
